Position Overview: Landcare NSW, the peak body of community-led conservation and natural resource management in New South Wales, is seeking a highly-skilled, strategic operations and finance leader to join our team as the COO. This crucial role involves managing our financial operations, financial oversight, and various projects and programs beyond our main NSW Landcare Program, and providing operational HR support to our Team. The COO will play a vital role in aligning our financial strategy with our strategic objectives, fostering a culture of financial excellence, and ensuring the sustainability of the business. Joining us means becoming an integral part of a team dedicated to impactful environmental conservation and community engagement, by supporting our Team.
Role Purpose: The COO has primary responsibility for the financial affairs of Landcare NSW. Reporting to the CEO, the COO is also responsible for financial control, cash flow management, budgets, financial reporting, analytics, line management of Project/Program Managers, and HR processes for the organization. This role is the key operational relationship contact for grant providers, bankers, auditors, and regulators and plays a crucial part in strategic decision-making within the organization. As a relatively small organization, we also require the COO to take on an operational role in supporting Project/Program Managers in the delivery of projects, as well as take a key role in ensuring grants, proposals, contracts, and bids are of the highest quality.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Collaboration and Oversight:
Work closely with the Finance Audit Risk Management (FARM) committee to provide key financial insights and ensure alignment with financial strategies, risk management, and audit processes.
Utilize strong analytical acumen to assess financial strategies and support decision-making, ensuring robust financial health and compliance.
Financial Leadership and Analytical Expertise:
Develop financial and business strategies and oversee their implementation across the organization.
Manage the budgeting processes, expenditure approvals, and financial reporting to support the company’s strategic direction.
Provide practical and hands-on support on an as-needs basis
Operational Management and Project Supervision:
Oversee the financial management of projects and programs, applying analytical skills to ensure financial and strategic alignment with our organizational goals.
Ensure effective cash flow management, financial planning, and investment strategies in collaboration with the FARM committee.
Monitor and direct strategic business plans and assist in formulating the organization’s future direction and supporting tactical initiatives.
Must be willing to support the work of direct reports from time to time to ensure business continuity such as payroll or project management.
Team Development and Systems Proficiency:
Design and implement policies to promote culture and vision and oversee operations to keep the business on track.
Lead and develop the finance team and project/program managers, fostering a high-performance and collaboration culture.
Oversee the organization’s transaction processing systems and manage finance staff and contractors ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory entities and meeting the expectations of FARM Committee members.
Compliance and Risk Management:
Comply with national and local financial requirements by studying existing and new legislation and adopting appropriate actions.
Maintain banking relationships and oversee financial and IT systems, ensuring compliance with regulatory entities.
Key Requirements:
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing teams and enabling financial performance across various initiatives.
- Excellent communication skills and highly collaborative, with the ability to articulate financial strategies and insights to a range of stakeholders, while also being highly motivated and self-directed.
- Formal tertiary qualifications in project management/business/accountancy, CA/CPA preferred.
- 7-10 experience in a CFO/COO role or similar senior executive positions.
- Proven experience in financial management and leadership, with a strategic approach to financial planning and analysis.
- Experience in designing and improving financial control systems and writing
- HR knowledge and experience including an understanding of legislative requirements.
- Prepare reports for a board of directors.
- Highly developed experience in managing projects and project and program team leaders.
